#BEDM – Workspace

My workspace has quite a few functions: Its my office, my craft room, my gym and more often than not, a bit of a dumping ground. I would love for it to be more organised and have a space for everything and I’m constantly looking for ways to make everything fit within it. I’m failing at this at the moment so have started a Workspace Pinterest board to see if I can some ideas and inspiration. Here’s a few of my favourites.

I love the prints and simplicity of this workspace. Having inspiration is so important in a workspace and I love the typography in these.

Now this is what I’m talking about! Check out all the organisation here. Little drawers for paper, pens, odds and ends, shelves and cups for other bits and pieces. Perfection!

I love having the space to spread out when I’m working. Paper, pens, post-its etc are always all over the place, as well as having somewhere for my computer, my phone and my Filofax. Ideally, I’d also love somewhere for my sewing machine and other bits and pieces that I use to make things.

#BEDM – Being Adventurous

My idea of being adventurous is ordering something different from the Chinese takeaway. It’s a risky business – you put your order in, wait 40 minutes+ for it to arrive, open it up and hope that it’s at least as good as your usual order. If it’s not, it’s the most crushing thing ever. Or is that just me?!

That being said, I do love a good walking adventure. I love packing up supplies in my backpack, tugging on my walking boots and heading out on good hike. While on holiday in Cornwall last week, we walked around the Lizard coast path quite a bit, including walking down the cliff side to see the Lizard lifeboat. At the top of the steep steps it said that the walk down was ‘physically challenging’ and they weren’t lying! Plus, we’d already been walking around the coast path for an hour and we planned to walk to the lighthouse on the Lizard Point. Talk about pooped! Even Poppy, with her little legs, found it challenging. But it was great to see the lifeboat up close.

#BEDM – Trebah Gardens

Yesterday as Museum Day and in Oxford, we’re really spoilt with the amazing Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers museum. While we were in Cornwall last week, we didn’t visit any museums, but we did go to Trebah Gardens. It’s dog friendly, has lots to see and it has it’s own beach. Perfect.

It has such an amazing array of plants of all colours, shapes and sizes. We headed straight down to the beach upon arrival and enjoyed a salted caramel ice cream. Then we headed back up to the koi pond, via the water garden, which was incredibly tranquil. It was such a lovely place, we intended to go back, as the ticket is valid for 7 days. But alas, we ran out of time and didn’t make it. It’s definitely somewhere we’ll visit again next time we’re near. Poppy was welcome throughout the gardens and she loved it! There were so many smells for her that she was exhausted when we finished. Dogs have free entry and we even got a dog biscuit on arrival! So cute! The gardens were a real inspiration to me and I took way too many pictures. I love that the beach has such a history too, as it was used as an embarkation point for the D-Day landings. The boathouse that’s on the beach was also built by racing driver, Donald Healey.

Trebah Garden is now one of my favourite places to visit in Cornwall! How about you? What’s your favourite garden to visit?

#BEDM – Mental Health Awareness Week

As it’s Mental Health Awareness week, I thought it might be a good idea to write about my own experience with mental health. I’ve been suffering from depression and anxiety for about the last four years. It was triggered by a very unpleasant and ongoing stressful work situation and compounded by insane working hours (14 hours a day for at least 5 days a week for about 3+ years!), moving house 4 times in 3 years and the death of both my grandmothers. When I spoke with the counsellor my GP referred me to, she wasn’t at all surprised with how I was feeling, especially as there’s family history of depression. I don’t want to go into the details of how I felt at my lowest points, as it’s still too soon. However, at one point, my anxiety was so bad that I would wake up with palpitations. So I made the decision to quit my job and get myself well. After a few years, I’m starting to feel more like me again. That’s not to say that I’m ‘recovered’, as I don’t think I ever will be.

While my depression is pretty much under control, I do have bad days, though thankfully, they’re rare. What does flare up much more is my anxiety and it can be triggered by anything from overtiredness to just feeling overwhelmed. Mostly, however, it’s when I feel out of control. So when people tell me, ‘Just don’t worry about it’, that’s like telling me not to breath. I don’t choose to worry and I realise that a lot of the time, I’m worrying about things I can’t control, but knowing that doesn’t help. Last week, I had an anxiety flare up because we booked a last minute holiday, which is crazy right?! Holidays are great so why would that make me anxious? Well, I plan everything. It helps me manage my time and that helps me feel in control, which helps me manage my anxiety. By being spontaneous, it meant that everything I had planned had to change. My anxiety peaked during Body Combat, when I felt so overwhelmed I nearly cried. Did I manage to get everything done? Yes. Was my holiday as awesome as I knew it would be? Yes. Will that help me to control my anxiety the next time I do something spontaneous? Not a chance! I can go weeks without being anxious, then I’ll be anxious for days.

There are few things that I do which help. Eating a healthy diet definitely helps. It helps me feel better generally and it helps me feel in control. Exercising is also a massive help, as it makes me feel good and releases lots of lovely good endorphins, improves my sleep and helps me forget about what’s worrying me by making me focus on what I’m doing. There’s no way you can successfully do a Body Combat class while thinking of something else. No way! Not working too much helps too, which is why I always try to finish work at 5pm, walk Poppy, do a section or two of Fit in 15 before relaxing for the evening. I’m also thinking of trying Headspace, which is guided meditation for modern living. It’s supposed to improve mindfulness and help manage anxiety. I’ll let you know how I get on!
