Poppy Proofing Crafty Chai Towers

We’ve been making great progress on our list of jobs that need doing around the house. Getting Poppy has caused a few to be more important and so we’ve acted on them sooner. Poppy has free run of the house, with the exception of sleeping on our bed. This is fine except our stairs are wooden and quite steep. Watching Poppy navigate her way down them is terrifying! They’re so awkward, my Mum’s elderly pooch, Harvey, can’t get down them at all. So we decided to carpet them. It’s not just for Poppy – they’re old stairs & creak a lot, I’ve never been completely happy with them, as I’ve been terrified about falling down them, being the clumsy oaf that I am! Last week Selkirk-Harris Carpets came and put in a lovely bit of carpet that we’re all very happy with!

The difference it has made is unbelievable. The stairs are much quieter & easier to get down, for both Poppy & me! It’s also like walking on a cloud – Hello lovely underlay! The carpet also makes the stairs so much lighter, which is something we can never have too much of in this house! It even gets Poppy’s seal of approval.

Poppy on the carpet

One other change we’ve made has been inspired by Poppy’s muddy paws. Poppy often makes a beeline for the sofa after coming in from the garden. Now as the garden is in the middle of being redone, the borders aren’t sealed off & there’s a lot of dirt about. Poppy also really likes sitting on the borders! She then runs in the house, straight onto the sofa, muddy paws and all. We don’t mind Poppy on the sofa, but we do mind the paw prints left behind. You know what this means? Shopping trip for some new throws! We looked around at a few places online but couldn’t see anything we liked. Then we popped into Laura Ashley in Summertown, Oxford. I love Laura Ashley. A lot. Especially when there’s a sale on as you are guaranteed to get bargains galore! And, amazingly, we did! We bought two lovely throws 50% off! I love getting a good deal on things & we also came away with a basket for Poppy’s toys. Also in the sale. Awesome!

Poppy can get her muddy paws on these all she likes. Then, when we have guests over, we’ll whip off the throws & have our sofa back. Again, as you can see, Poppy is pretty happy with the throws! We’ve also had to start mopping the floor more often, which isn’t as much fun as shopping, but what can you do?! When Poppy isn’t sitting on the sofa with us, she’s napping the armchair, where she’s made a little nest for herself among the cushions! So adorable!

Tuesday Treat – The Hundred Pound Garden

As regular readers will know, my OH & I have been spending a lot of time on our garden. Anyone who has ever transformed a garden will know that it is not quick work, especially when winter has dragged its heels and hung around like an uninvited guest to a party! But now that the warmer weather is making a stand & we’ve finally been able to paint the fence without getting frostbite (took almost the whole weekend – Yawn!) we’re ready to start planning the garden. It’s going to take a while & a little bit of cash, but we’ll get there. I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to plant in the Autumn ready for next Spring. Until then, I can plan & dream & visit garden centre aplenty! Or I could just save up my pennies & buy a Hundred Pound Garden, brought to you by the lovely people at Burford Garden Centre.

The garden plan is very simple:

  1. You choose a garden. It can either be an artists garden, a cut flower garden or a wildlife garden.
  2. Your garden, and all the bits you’ll need, are delivered to your door.
  3. You then prepare the ground
  4. Plant the plants
  5. Water the plants
  6. Watch how your garden grows.

I think this idea is genius! You can buy other bits and pieces as extras, like gardening gloves, twine and watering cans. It’s such a unique idea & great for a wedding, new home or birthday presents. One of the reasons I really like this idea is because it’s quite daunting deciding what to plant and where, because you kind of want to get it right first go, especially if you’ve been waiting for a long time, like we have. What do you think? Would you use the Hundred Pound Garden? If so, which would you choose?

Tuesday Treat – Spring Cleaning

The weather seems to have finally caught up with the fact that it’s Spring time, which is nice. It’s definitely prompted us to make a few changes around the house, as has Poppy’s arrival. Tomorrow, we’re getting new carpet on the stairs. This is something that we’ve been wanting to do since we moved in, but watching Poppy go up & down the stairs has made us get it organised. We’ve also got a new blind for the kitchen, which is, again, something that we’ve been meaning to do since we moved in – Over three years ago!

New Blind

When we moved in, there were some really cheap & nasty blinds at the kitchen window. Taking them down was one of the first things I did. Since then, our south facing kitchen has been full of sun. This is great if you want to take some pictures for your blog but not if you need to do the washing up, as the sink is directly in front of the window. Now, after three years, we’ve got a lovely new blind to keep the sun out! That’s another job off the list – Happy days!

John Lewis Home Wish List

Regular readers will know that my OH & I are planning a few home improvements. I love going to shops & looking around at the different pieces of furniture & imagining how they would look in our home. One of my favourite places to go is John Lewis. This is because they have everything I could possibly want under one roof: stationery, furniture, bed linen & cake. What’s not to love about that?!

We recently visited our local John Lewis & had a look at some of their new collections. Here’s a round up of some of the things I’d really, really like.

Penelope Task Lamp

desk lampI need a new desk lamp, desperately. I’ve had the same paper Ikea one since I was in uni, which, sadly, was quite a long time ago now. We saw these lamps in the store and I think it would really look great on my desk. I love the vintage style and really like the duck egg blue colour.

The Sixty One Armchair

We’re in desperate need of a new armchair & I really like the idea of owning something with a retro feel but modern comfort. I also really like the mustard colour of this chair and as our lounge is painted a neutral colour & has a grey sofa, I think this would work really well.

Wayne Hemmingway Tea Storage Tin

Tea tinI was given some Cath Kidston storage jars a number of years ago. Sadly, they’ve not fared well & need replacing. I want this! I love the whole range by Wayne Hemmingway & think they’d work really well in our kitchen… when we finish it!

Melin Tregwynt St David’s Cross Throw

MT ThrowWe desperately need some throws for our sofa to help protect them from Poppy’s paws. I love this throw from Melin Tregwynt, but it’s far too pretty to have muddy paws walk all over it!

Orla Kiely Rhododendron Duvet Cover

I am a huge Orla Kiely fan & would love to have a new duvet cover. I really like this pattern & the colours in it. We’re starting to plan the redecoration of our bedroom, so I’m on the look out for colours, furniture & furnishings to help give me inspiration. This duvet cover definitely hits the spot!

Stride 4 Drawer Chest

Our bedroom furniture is dreadful. It’s the only room we haven’t put much thought into & we hate it! I’ve been looking through the different ranges in John Lewis and can’t decide between the Downton range or the Stride range. We need a new chest of drawers, wardrobes & bed, as well as a lot of elbow grease to get the wood chip off the walls. Yep. Wood chip  *shudders*

Lotta Jansdotter Ranka Scented Candle Jar

How cute is this candle? In my opinion, you can never have too many candles & one thing I’m aware of since having Poppy is that I don’t want the house to smell too much of ‘dog’! So I’m on the look out for scented candles & I love this one. (Did I mention I have a birthday coming up?!)

There is something very satisfying about redecorating, getting jobs done & planning on different things to put in your home. We’ve got a few jobs that we hope to achieve this summer so I’ll make sure to update on all our achievements!
