I recently bought a new laptop, a MacBook Air. I love it! All I needed to really enjoy it was a laptop case. I wanted something unique, different, homemade & not too expensive. I looked on Folksy & Etsy but couldn’t find one that I really liked, especially as my Air is the 11″ one and there weren’t many for this size. What I wanted was one made with vintage green fabric – guess what, I had some! So I decided to have a go and make my own, especially as I’ve been reacquainted with my sewing machine recently.
The first thing I did was to sketch out the steps that I needed to follow. Then I measured my fabric and quilting batting. I hemmed the top of the fabric to make the edge nice, sewed on one my handmade labels and added the pink ric rac on the top. I bought the fabric a few weeks ago & it was tied up with the pink ric rac so I knew that it matched.
I then stitched the sides together before making the button flap, which included making a button hole – something I’ve never done before but was much easier than I thought it would be. I was really surprised! I stitched it on to the main body & added one of my vintage buttons.
It was really quick to do. When I showed it to my OH, he thought that I’d bought it. Saying that, it’s not perfect. My sewing isn’t always straight and I was very lazy with my measuring. Having said that, I think I might make a few for my Folksy shop. I have some lovely fabric at the moment & quite a bit of batting. I’ve also learnt a few things and would do some things differently – I’d add some fabric lining, measure more accurately, iron the fabric & stitch more slowly so that it’s straighter.
I’m so pleased with it & so glad that I gave it a go. I can’t wait to take it out & about!
