Dog Walks in Oxfordshire – Bablock Hythe

There’s something lovely about going for a long walk on a Summer evening. The lighter evenings give you a great excuse to stop what you’re doing and head out somewhere. This is exactly what we did last Saturday evening. It had been a lovely sunny day and it was a great chance to take advantage of the lovely weather. We headed to Bablock Hythe and parked in the car park of The Ferryman Inn. The signs state that the car park is for patrons only, which is fine as we were going there for a drink afterwards.

Bablock Hythe

The walk takes you alongside the Thames and there were a few fishermen still out there trying to get a bite. At the time we went, the fields were empty, but think that there are sometimes sheep in these fields so that might be something to watch out for.

Sunshine clouds

It was a really lovely evening and we got to see the sun come and go. We didn’t walk the whole way, as it’s part of the Thames Pathway so we only walked for about half an hour. This does mean that your walk can be as long or short as you want it to be. There are gates at either ends of the fields, so when we’d walked enough, we just turned back towards the inn.

tree climber

Poppy really enjoyed the walk, as there were a few trees for her to try and climb, as well as lots of smells for her to track. She did try and roll in some fox poo, as well as try to eat some Crayfish that the fishermen had slung out of the river! As the fields were enclosed, and we knew there was no chance she’d head for a dip in the Thames, we let her off the lead for a bit. She loved it!

The Thames

As the walk follows the Thames, it’s an easy, flat walk with great views and people to wave at as they sail up and down the river! A perfect reminder to take life a little bit more slowly.

Delicious

Upon returning to the car park, we picked up a treat for Poppy from the car and headed to the inn, where we had a drink and a packet of crisps. They’ve got quite a few tables outside and there’s plenty of places to sit along the river too. Poppy enjoyed barking at the ducks, as well as sniffing out their scents – it was the perfect end to a perfect day!

The Walk: The walk is part of the Thames Path, so you can walk for as long as you like. As it follows the river, it’s quite a flat walk so perfect if you’re looking for something easy.
Cost: Free
Car Park: Free, but for patrons of the Inn
Refreshments: Yes, head to the Ferryman Inn
Toilets: Just ask at the bar!

Got a suggestion for a great place to walk Poppy? Just let me know!

Secret Pizza Society Awesomeness!

Last Sunday, my OH, Poppy & I went to the MG event in Abingdon. We didn’t go for the cars, we went to support local businesses who were there for the day. It was a really hot day & the sun was out. It was more a day for lounging around in the shade, not so much a day for coffees & pizzas, but that didn’t stop us.

We had a look around at some of the different stalls & took a walk down by the river, where Poppy got lots of love from passers by. Then we headed to the main attraction – coffee from Throwing Buns & pizza from the guys at Secret Pizza Society. We’ve been fans of Throwing Buns since we moved to Abingdon. We love that place. Great food, good location & fab coffee. Secret Pizza Society are the new kids on the block and they are incredibly hard working! If you follow their twitter feed, then you’ll be able to find out where they’re going to popping up and making great pizza. And by great pizza, I mean one of the best I’ve ever tasted.

spsI went for a simple margarita pizza. Now, I’ve eaten a lot of pizza in my time & lots of places produce bland cheese & tomato pizza. As it’s a fairly simple one, you have to make sure all the ingredients pack a punch with great flavours. This pizza did that. It was really tasty, the tomato sauce was full of flavour, the base wasn’t too thick, but delicious and crispy. I can’t wait to see what other veggie offerings they’ll bring to the mix!

If you see Secret Pizza Society out and about near where you work, live or hang out, do yourself a favour & buy one of their pizzas! Not only are they local people, building a delicious independent business, but they also make amazing pizza!

Sunny Summer Walks

Having a dog has been the best excuse to get out into the fresh air. So this wonderful spell of warm weather is being enjoyed by us all here at Crafty Chai towers! We’re very lucky where we live, in that there are loads of lovely green spaces where we can walk Poppy, lots within walking distance of the house. One of her favourite walks is a nearby meadow. I know she likes it because she wags her tail the whole way around the walk!

Pretty walk

Not only that, but she really loves walking through & jumping about in the long grass. I can only imagine what she can smell but she finds smells that she wants to track. No wonder she loves it so much!

It’s quite a long walk around the meadow so she’s always really worn out when we get back, which is why we don’t go there every day. But when we do, Poppy is really in her element!

Walking with Poppy – Summer Outfit Wishlist

I am learning very quickly that dog walking requires a wardrobe of it’s own. You need to have sensible shoes, clothes that are waterproof & easily washed, as well as having lots of pockets. I also hate changing my clothes throughout the day, so whatever I put on in the morning has to keep me warm throughout the day. It’s a whole other world for me to dream about! So here are a few things that I need (Note – need! They are essential items!) in my wardrobe this Summer. So far I have the sandals and the jeans – just keeping my fingers crossed that I don’t need new glasses at my opticians appointment next week then I’m getting the Joules jacket!

Joules Womens Nautical Jacket

Joules Womens Nautical Jacket

I tried this on at Burford Garden Company last weekend & it fits like a glove. It’s really thin, which is perfect for summer showers. Plus blue is my favourite colour!

Fat Face Ankle Grazer Jeans

Fat Face Ankle Grazers

I have finally bought a pair of jeans that aren’t bootcut. Yep. I’m no fashionista! I dress for warmth & comfort! But as I’m not a massive fan of shorts, I thought these would be great when out walking with Poppy when it’s warmer. Lighter than my regular jeans, but great for tucking into wellies when it’s raining.

Clarks Originals Kestral Soar

Kestral Soar White

I have been a Birkenstock girl for many years. But I think it’s time for a change. Poppy walks quite fast so I need a sandal that stays on my foot by itself & I love the retro look of these sandals. I hate having hot feet so when the weather was really nice (remember that?!) wearing trainers wasn’t an option so I found a pair of these in the right size & bought them. Then the weather turned so I’m hoping it won’t be long before the sun comes back so I can try them out! They are obviously popular as Clarks have removed them from their website & when I contacted them about sizes, they told me that they’d sold out of them in most sizes!

Do you have specific clothes for walking the dog? Or maybe a few Summer wish-list items of your own? I’d love to know!
