Last week I noticed that Oxfork were going to be doing American Pancakes as a breakfast special. American Pancakes are my all time favourite breakfast dish, especially with eggs on the side. I’ve tried many, and liked most. But Oxfork is one of my favourite places in the area. I love everything they stand for: local, seasonal, independent. But not only that: They do brunch. All day, every day. And they have great tea. And amazing brownies. And free wifi. If I still lived in Oxford, I’d be a permanent resident. There is decent free parking in the surrounding streets too.
The dish came with bacon & maple syrup, but I asked to swap the bacon for some eggs, which was no problem. This was the perfect start to a fantastic Saturday. I really hope these stay for while, if not indefinitely. My mouth is actually watering while writing this! Along with this, I had a pot of the wonderful Jeeves & Jericho Breakfast Tea & perused some of the cookery books that they have on the shelves.
Is there anything better than a perfect brunch on the weekend?!
Sunday morning my OH suggested we go out for breakfast – like I need to be asked twice – I got dressed and off we went.
We wanted to do a bit of shopping too so parked near Greens Cafe in Oxford & headed in. One reason I wanted to go there was because I knew they did pancakes & I’ve never tried them. Obviously I had a huge mug of chai to wash them down. I couldn’t believe the size of the pancakes. They were huge! Not to mention delicious. It came with a lovely side of fruit & the pancakes filled me up for most of the day. Perfect!
One criticism was that there was no atmosphere in the cafe whatsoever. It was quite early so they weren’t very busy. There was no music, TV or papers to read. It was really quiet and was a bit like eating breakfast in a museum! I’ve never known it so quiet there. If you go later in the day it’s usually buzzing. But the pancakes were awesome! And I love my pancakes x
I love weekends and I love eating out. Combine the two and I’m a happy girl. When my OH suggested meeting some friends for breakfast at Atomic Burger I didn’t have to have my arm twisted. And knowing that they had a new menu made it even more lush.
In hindsight, I wish I’d had the Molly Ringwald. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy my Charlie Brown pancakes but I was envious of the huge portions that everyone else got when I only had two pancakes. At least this means I’ll be going back to try it out! My OH had the Judd Nelson and was impressed by the amount of food he received. All this and endless cups of Joe – what’s not to love?!
Not only that, for £1.50 we also bought a sticker book to get free food (and be super cool, natch!) I think this is a great idea – as if they need to give people a reason to go back for more! The service was always with a smile, which must have been tough on Sunday as there were some alarm/electrical issues. When we arrived & we were told we might not be able to get breakfast, to say I was gutted is an understatement so I didn’t mind waiting for food for a while.
I’ll definitely be going back for breakfast soon. If for no other reason than to get another sticker!
