February saw a number of TV shows returning to our screens. To that end, my OH and I needed to upgrade our TV package so we could enjoy them. We subscribed to Now TV so we could watch Girls, True Detective and Game of Thrones when it comes out. We also rejoined Netflix so we could bingewatch House of Cards (and be ready for Orange is the New Black in June). Let the viewing commence!
TV
House of Cards

I’ve never seen the original House of Cards, but this version is epic! I am a huge fan of political dramas and House of Cards doesn’t disappoint. The things Frank Underwood will do to gain political success is unbelievable, yet completely believable. My OH felt that there was something lacking from this series, but there’s plenty of action and tension throughout. It’s a bit like a dark West Wing and is totally worth your time. Can’t wait for season 3!
Girls

This is a show that’s been on my radar for some time, but didn’t get around to watching it for ages. Series 1 & 2 are available on Now TV so we decided to give it a go. I can’t decide if it’s genius, hilarious or just weird. Either way, I’m enjoying watching most of it. Some episodes seem to be about nothing in particular, while others are hilarious. Adam is my favourite character because he is so unpredictable and hilarious. Definitely worth exploring.
Line of Duty

My OH & I stumbled across this by accident on BBC2 and we are loving it. I’m a huge fan of police dramas and this does not disappoint. I didn’t watch the first series and only discovered there was one recently, but you can watch this as a standalone series. Keeley Hawes is brilliant in it. I’m still not sure if she’s innocent or guilty, but I am hooked! Can’t wait to see how the series pans out.
Southland

I was very pleased to discover the fifth (and final) series of Southland on More4 last week. We’ve been watching Southland since it started and have loved every series. Every single episode has plenty of action and manages to keep you gripped from the opening credits to the closing ones. The characters are really enjoyable too. Each one loveable but flawed in some way. I’ll be sad when this series is over!
The Good Wife

I’ve also been enjoying the return of The Good Wife, which is one of my favourite shows. Not only are the cases that the lawyers deal with entertaining in themselves, the relationships between the main characters are really well written. This series has already had a few massive developments so I can’t wait to see how the rest of it turns out. If you enjoy Grey’s Anatomy then give it a watch.
Nashville

Nashville is my guilty pleasure.
I wasn’t overly keen about watching it, but once I started, I was addicted! It’s like an upmarket soap opera and I gasp ‘No way!’ at least once an episode when I can’t believe how devious one of the characters has been! It’s also got a great soundtrack to boot. The last episode of series 1 ended on quite a knife edge so the opening of series 2 was not to be missed. It’s only a few episodes in, but there’s lots of shock and awe still to be had!
Film
Prisoners
I was very much looking forward to watch after seeing the trailer. I’m a massive fan of Hugh Jackman and will pretty much watch anything with him in. (Yep, even that last Wolverine film). I liked this film because both Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal play someone very different. It was completely gripping from beginning to end, with twists and turns that you really didn’t see coming. If you enjoy psychological thrillers, then this is definitely worth seeing.
Captain Phillips

I wasn’t overly fussed on seeing this originally but it had me gripped from the start. It’s pretty action packed, but it also made me feel quite claustrophobic. Because it’s all at sea, there’s no escaping the pirates and as a viewer, you really feel it! It’s very tense, so if you’re looking for something that’s quite easy to watch, this isn’t it. But it does show how real and very terrifying the piracy issue is.
Enough Said

I am a huge fan of James Gandolfini. I like how he plays such a variety of characters and I really enjoyed this film. It’s the perfect Sunday afternoon film, as it’s quite light and easygoing
. Enough Said is really heartwarming and funny, all about dating after divorce and sharing the bits of you that you thought no one would ever see again.
Rush

As a huge F1 fan, I was really keen to see this. F1 isn’t that big in America so I was interested to see what how they’d interpreted it. The film encapsulates the different types of drivers, as well as the enjoyment people get from seeing cars go really, really fast. It highlights the fact that motorsport is incredibly dangerous, even if accidents don’t happen that much these days, there were times when death was a regular occurrence. I liked this because I’m an F1 fan. I’m not sure if you would if you weren’t interested in motorsports!
What have you been watching lately? Any recommendations?
